Modest gains in gold, silver, lead and zinc more than offset a slip in copper and nickel prices over the July 10-16 trading session, driving the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index up 32.57 points to close at 3,304.45. Average daily trading volumes rebounded to 88.4 million shares.
Decliners continued to lead gainers with 62 junior companies setting new annual lows versus 45 that touched new 52-week highs.
On strong zinc prices, prospective developer Yukon Zinc posted top trading honours, closing the week up 4 at 27 per share with 22.3 million shares changing hands. The company recently closed a $5-million flow-through financing earmarked for its Wolverine zinc-silver project in the southwestern Yukon.
Blue Note Mining remained a strong trader over the session, notching up 2 to close at 71 per share on volume of 19.5 million shares. It has begun processing ore at its recently reactivated Caribou lead-zinc mine, in New Brunswick, and expects to have saleable concentrates by the end of July.
Peak Gold was a strong trader over the period, inching up two pennies to 70 per share on volume of over 10 million shares. Earlier this year, the company acquired the Peak gold mine, in Australia, and the Amapari gold mine, in Brazil, from Goldcorp.
Shares of Sage Gold climbed 2.5 on trading volume of 8 million shares, closing at 20 apiece. The company recently closed a $1-million financing and awaits additional results from drilling on its Jacobus project, near Beardmore, in northwestern Ontario, where it earlier cut 8.5 metres of 0.95% nickel and 1.16% copper.
News that it had secured processing rights for uranium-bearing coal ash at a Chinese project sent Sparton Resources soaring 37% to close at 50 per share on trading volume of over 7.4 million shares.
Following its latest drill results from the Kwanika copper-gold project in north-central B.C., Serengeti Resources saw its share price collapse, dropping 46%, or $1.90, to close at $2.25 per share on trading volume of over 6.4 million shares. Results delivered long mineralized intercepts from the porphyry body, but grades fell short of investor expectations.
Mag Silver posted a gain of 21%, closing the week up $2.53 at $14.49 per share on trading volume of 622,000 shares. An American Stock Exchange listing, along with high-grade silver intercepts from drilling on the company’s Valdecanas and Batopilas silver projects, in Mexico, buoyed Mag’s share price.
Deep drilling by Antares Minerals on its Haquira copper-gold porphyry project, in southern Peru, returned a long mineralized intercept, pushing the company’s stock up 81, or 46%, to $2.56 per share on weekly volume of more than 1 million shares.
Lifted by strong lead and zinc prices, Tamerlane Ventures posted a 42% gain, closing the session up 72 at $2.45 per share on 1.9 million shares traded. Advancing its Pine Point lead-zinc deposit in the Northwest Territories, the company also recently acquired the Los Pinos copper project in southern Peru.
