Toronto Stock Exchange Oct. 23-29

The TSX Composite Index climbed 383.75 points to 14,427.35 for the Oct. 23-29 trading period. Along with higher oil and metal prices, the advance was fuelled by investor belief that the Federal Reserve Bank will lower interest rates to boost the U.S. economy.

The price of gold continued to climb, surging another US$37.25 to US$788.50 per oz. Those gains helped bolster the Global Gold Index by almost 20 points as it finished at 321.17. Silver also had a strong session, breaking through the US$14-mark and finishing at US$14.41 per oz.

Yamana Gold and Kinross Gold took their usual posts as the most actively traded of the gold miners, moving roughly 50 million and 36 million shares, respectively. Yamana finished the period at $14.27 while Kinross was at $18.30.

Fellow gold miner Barrick Gold went on a spending spree that had it in the headlines for the period. Less than a week after announcing it was buying the Kainantu gold mine and exploration ground in Papua New Guinea, it tabled an all-cash offer for Arizona Star Resource, which owns a majority stake in the Cerro Casale copper-gold project in Chile. Barrick is offering $18 per share — a 27% premium over Arizona Star’s 20-day volume-weighted average trading price.

As for the base metal camp, it also had a strong period led by gains in the price of copper, tin and lead. Aluminum, nickel and zinc prices held their value or gained slightly. The better prices moved the Capped Metals and Mining Index up to 942.61 — a 68.18-point gain.

The period’s most popular miner, Eastern Platinum, was up 36 to $2.92 on nearly 70 million shares traded. The Vancouver-based company announced infill drilling at the Kareespruit section of the Crocodile River mine in South Africa is 75% complete. The company is aiming to upgrade the indicated and inferred resource on the property for a prefeasibility study.

Uranium exploration junior Forsys Metals was the period’s biggest gainer by percentage as it surged nearly 58% to $4.68. The company, with its flagship uranium project sitting near Rio Tinto’s long-producing Rossing mine in Namibia, finally had a strong upturn after trading as high as $10 per share in the spring. The company announced the appointment of two experienced mining executives to its board.

High-grade results from Anaconda Mining’s San Gabriel project in Chile helped propel the Toronto-based company up the market 45% to $1.09. Drilling was highlighted by a 62-metre interval grading 42% iron.

Constellation Copper endured the largest loss by percentage as it fell 36% to 35 for the period on no news. The company has been dogged by its inability to meet production targets laid out in a feasibility study for its Lisbon Valley mine in Utah.
