Kinross Gold has teamed up with the University of Guelph to establish a new education and research network between Canada and Brazil.
Kinross will provide the new initiative — which will focus on developing ideas for more efficient and sustainable resource use — with $1 million in funding and logistical support over three years.
The Kinross Canada-Brazil Network for Advanced Education and Research in Natural Resource Management will allow members of government, academia and the private sector to establish and collaborate on research projects.
The network will act as a forum to establish new resource management initiatives, educate those involved on tactics for using resources more effectively and help develop strategies for rehabilitating disturbed lands.
The Canada-Brazil network will look at methods to improve soil and water quality, including the potential of using mine wastes as fertilizer or soil conditioner; and adapting vegetation to grow on disturbed lands.
Kinross has two gold projects in Brazil: Paracuta, a large-scale open-pit mine located 230 km from Brasilia; and Crixas, a 50-50 joint venture with Anglogold Ashanti.
