Toronto Stock Exchange (February 25, 2008)

The TSX Composite Index finished the Family Day-shortened Feb. 12-15 period up 95.84 points at 13,226.76. The gain was in line with global markets, as a broad rally was credited to new investor optimism that banks and other financial companies have gotten through the bulk of the credit market turmoil.

Good news for markets overall meant notso-good news for the price of gold, which came down in London slightly to US$903.25 from US$916.25. The loss was mirrored in the Global Gold Index, which came off roughly 10 points, finishing the session at 333.77 points.

As for the other precious metals, silver lost US31 to finish at US$17.01, while platinum broke through the US$2,000 mark as it finished the period at US$2,109 — a move that guided investors towards Canada’s largest platinum play, Eastern Platinum. The Vancouver-based miner with assets on South Africa’s ultra-rich Bushveld Complex gained 17 to finish the period at $3.40.

In the base metals camp, results were mixed. While Lundin Mining reported lower than expected earnings and fell 39 to $7.88, Inmet Mining saw its shares gain a solid $6.14 to finish at $72.43.

The disparate results were reflected in the Capped Metals and Mining Index, which ended just 2 points lower at 737.65 as LME prices for copper, aluminum and tin all made slight gains, while nickel and zinc prices fell. The price of lead finished the week as it began –at US$1.36 per lb.

News that Fletcher Nickel had intersected 0.88% nickel over 27 metres at its Texmont property, 45 km south of Timmins, Ont., sent the company’s shares up 42% to 64. The company says the intersections prove that it can expand on historical resources in the area, and it compared mineralization to that at Australia’s Mt. Keith, which is mined by BHP Billiton.

Demonstrating one way to deal with the market not fully valuing a company’s assets, Continental Precious Minerals laid plans to buy back 3.6 million or 10% of its common shares. The activity helped boost its share

TSX most active issues

price by 28.4% to $1.04. Continental is a uranium exploration company with a focus on the development of its Swedish assets.

A glitch in its attempt to acquire St. Genevieve Resources cost Ascendant Copper 25% of its share value, as the exploration company finished the period at $1.05. Ascendant announced that a special meeting with St. Genevieve shareholders was postponed so that amendments to the deal could

be made. Those amendments centre around the fact that, while the all-share deal was originally announced in October, Ascendant shares are looking less valuable these days since the Ecuadorian government cancelled two concessions at its Junin property in January. At presstime, Ascendant announced that St. Genevieve had agreed to an offer that upped the bid by 6 million shares to 36 million shares.
