Rare purple diamonds uncovered at Quebec JV

John Ryder’s Dianor Resources (DOR-V, RSDNF-O) and its joint-venture partners Metalex Ventures (MTX-V, MLXVF-O) and Wemindji Exploration have stumbled onto a new diamond discovery in the James Bay region of Quebec.

The diamonds — including rare purple stones — were discovered from surface rock samples on the joint venture’s Ekomiak V property and on Dianor’s adjacent, 100%- owned PEM property.

A total of 856 diamonds, including 16 purple ones, were recovered from 26 surface rock samples of conglomerates that date back at least 2.7 billion years.

Purple is one of the rarest and most desirable colours, Dianor said in a statement, making the discovery unique and amongst the oldest diamond-bearing occurrences in the world.

Of the 26 conglomerate samples that contained diamonds, four contained 16 purple microdiamonds with the largest sitting on a 212-micron screen and measuring 335 by 379 by 225 microns.

Three of the purple diamond samples were collected on the Ekomiak V property and the fourth was collected on the PEM property.

All the purple diamonds were associated with samples having high diamond counts — about 39 to 224 diamonds per sample.

Dianor says the diamond-bearing Ekomiak conglomerate extends for 15 km along strike and is up to 1 km in width on the PEM and the Ekomiak V properties, with individual outcrops about 500 metres by 400 metres in size.

Dianor’s shares recently traded at about 44 apiece in a 52-week trading range of 28.5-$1.58.
