Baffinland Iron Mines (BIM-T, BIMGF-O) has hired AMEC and Aker Solutions to help with the development of its Mary River project on Baffin Island, Nunavut.
As part of the contract, AMEC will be responsible for basic and detailed engineering services, logistics planning, procurement support and construction management services over the next six years.
AMEC has completed work on successful projects in northern Canada worth more than $30 billion.
As for Aker Solutions, the construction and engineering company has completed a scoping study outlining the potential expansion of the project to a production rate of 30 million tonnes per year. A feasibility study originally pegged production at 18 million tonnes per year.
Baffinland plans to expand the project through the development of a second open-pit mine, which would access both deposits No. 2 and No. 3.
The study projects additional production to come on-line in the fourth year of operations.
