ABB To Supply Electrical Gear For Vale Plant

Power and automation supplier ABB (ABB-N) has signed a US$62- million deal with Vale (RIO-N) to supply electrical equipment to the company’s Oman Industrial Complex project, in the Middle Eastern country of Oman.

As part of the contract, ABB will provide an Extended Automation System 880xA, a collaborative production management system, power distribution, transformers, motor control centres, drives and motors, as well as substation infrastructure for the factory.

The US$1.4-billion material-handling and iron ore pellet plant, which is in its first phase of construction, is located at the Sohar International Port, 260 km northwest of Muscat.

The plant, which is the first of its kind in the region, is expected to produce up to 10 million tonnes of iron ore pellets per year; the distribution centre will have enough space to house 40 million tonnes per year.

The Sohar project is expected to begin production in late 2010.
