Canadian equity markets were mixed during the June 9-15 reporting period, with the S&P/TSX composite index down 154 points, or 1.5%, to 10,395; the Capped Metals and Mining index up 14 points, or 2.2%, to 629; and the Capped Materials index down 11 points, or 3.8%, to 280.
Investors were concerned about a slowdown in factory activity in Europe and in New York State, and U. S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said that despite signs of stabilization in the world economy, it was too early to reverse economic stimulus measures.
Precious metal prices declined on U. S. dollar strength. The gold sector fell, with leader Barrick Gold down $3.53 at $37.33. The silver sector also declined, with Silver Standard Resources losing $2.14 to $22.51.
The coal sector caught on to last week’s rally in the coal price, with Western Canadian Coal adding 46¢ to $2.09. Grande Cache Coal, Hillsborough Resources and Cline Mining all posted gains.
Molybdenum miners Thompson Creek Metals and Moly Mines gained ground after J. P. Morgan analyst Mike Gambardella projected that the moly price would rise to US$15 per lb. from about US$10. Thompson Creek is hiking production, and J. P. Morgan is rating the company’s shares a top pick with a US$15.50 target. Mercator Minerals, which is building a moly plant at its Mineral Park copper mine in Arizona, added 10¢ to $1.75.
Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund advanced $3.42 to $34.02 on a report from Goldman Sachs JBWere analysts that iron ore prices could climb by 10% next year after dropping this year.
The nickel price continued to climb, helping First Nickel gain 4¢ to 17¢. The company owns the Lockerby nickel mine near Sudbury, Ont., which has been placed on care and maintenance because of low metals prices. Nickel miner Crowflight Minerals likewise posted a gain, rising 3¢ to 27¢. The advancing nickel price, as well as higher zinc prices, also pushed Lundin Mining to gain 45¢ at $3.36.
In emailed comments, National Bank analysts Pierre Fournier and Angelo Katsoras recommended fertilizer investments, among others, predicting that a looming food crisis will place upward pressure on agricultural commodity prices. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan added $1.22 to $126.05, and Agrium was up $3.11 at $54.55.
Aura Minerals jumped 19¢ to 62¢ after announcing a $100-million share issue to finance the purchase of three gold mines from YamanaGold.
Centerra Gold lost 92¢ to $6.36 after its Boroo mine in Mongolia was suspended by the government for up to three months.
Katanga Mining dropped 23¢ to 50¢ after announcing an early liquidity closing of US$172 million on its US$250-million rights offering. In return, the company issued 492 million shares to two subsidiaries of commodities trading house Glencore International.
