Toronto Stock Exchange June 23-29

The S&P/TSX Composite index managed to gain back some of its losses from the previous period as marginal amounts of confidence in the global economy returned to markets. The June 23-29 period saw the index climb 642 points on the back of stronger oil prices and a corresponding push in the energy sector.

At presstime, however, such confidence was proving shaky, as the market was heading south after data showed lower levels of consumer confidence in June than in the previous two months.

The Global Gold index managed to carve out a solid gain for the period, tracing the price of the yellow metal upwards. The gold price was up roughly US$16 and finished at US$935.50 per oz., helping to bolster the index by 30 points to 324.56.

It was also a good period for base metals as evidenced by the Capped Metals and Mining index climbing 40 points to 617.47. The positive move came on the back of higher prices for copper, aluminum, nickel, tin, lead and zinc, as economic data showed Chinese consumption remaining high as a byproduct of the government’s massive infrastructure program.

Lake Shore Gold saw its share price surge 50¢ or 20.5% and its joint-venture partner West Timmins Mining rose 55¢ or 53.9%, both in one day, after announcing a bonanza intercept at their Thunder Creek gold property near Timmins, Ont. The best hole intersected 12.75 grams gold per tonne over 83.4 metres, including 24.68 grams gold over 13 metres, 38.22 grams gold over 11 metres and 26.78 grams gold over 8.5 metres.

Golden Star Resources’ share price climbed nearly 30% to $2.39. The company with two operating mines in Ghana rode news of new savings on electricity for its mines. Power costs had jumped last summer when the country raised the price of power to 18¢ per kilowatt-hour from 10¢. The authority in charge of electricity announced that the cost would be slashed to just 8¢ per

kilowatt-hour and that the new rate would be implemented retroactively to January of this year. The change in price will reduce the company’s cash costs by US$56 per oz. to US$515 per oz. for the first quarter.

Crew Gold saw its share price tumble by 23% to finish the period at 61¢ after announcing lower than expected production guidance for 2009 at its LEFA gold mine in Guinea. Previous guidance for the mine had pegged production at 290,000 oz. but now the company says the number will be between 220,000 oz. and 240,000 oz. Crew blames plant equipment failures during the first six months of the year and refurbishment of the mining fleet taking longer than expected. It expects to reach its original planned rate of production in 2010.
