The market continued its bumpy roller-coaster ride during the Aug. 18-24 session. A major sell-off during the previous trading period was more than offset by a four-day rally that drove the Dow Jones Industrial Average 4.1% higher and pushed the S&P 500 index up 4.7%. The Dow rose 373.9 points to close at 9,509.28 and the S&P 500 tacked on 45.84 points to close at 1,025.57. Indexes reached 10-month highs, but the momentum slowed on Aug. 24 in line with warnings that upcoming reports on consumer confidence and housing could dampen investors’ upbeat moods.
Many metals held steady or improved over the period. Copper was up US15¢ to US$2.89 per lb., nickel gained US25¢ to finish at US$8.90 per lb. and silver was US28¢ higher at US$14.41 per oz.
An improved U. S. dollar sent the price of gold down US$18.75 to US$951.50 per oz., but that didn’t stop the major gold producers from seeing increases in their share prices. Barrick Gold was up US$1.44 to US$34.38, Newmont Mining rose US$1.17 to US$39.94, and Kinross Gold gained US$1.02 to close at US$19.22.
A Royal Bank of Canada report released during the week noted that North American precious metals producers have seen margin increases over the first and second quarters as a result of lower cash costs.
Rio Tinto was the top gainer by value over the period, up US$14.11 per share to finish at US$162.51, followed by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, up US$6.08 to US$65.44.
Of note, three Freeport employees were detained for questioning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for alleged misuse of public funds.
Coal company Natural Resource Partners was the top loser by value over the period, falling US94¢ to close at US$18.12. Analysts downgraded their ratings on the company over concerns that it might have to cut distribution because of weak coal contract pricing. The company owns and manages coal properties, coal handling and transportation infrastructure in Appalachia, and the Illinois and Powder River basins.
