The clock continued to tick backwards on the S&P/TSX Venture composite index for the Sept. 15-21 reporting period. Gaining 11.17 points to 1,269.35, the Venture hit its highest point since the first week of October 2008. Overall, the average daily trading volume maintained a blistering pace of about 128 million shares. In fact, single day trading volume on Sept. 16 reached its highest since the end of 2007 at 173.4 million. The ongoing surge of the Venture board was matched by the proportion of 52-week highs to lows: 131 to 22.
Across the board, metal prices held steady during the period. For example, gold remained over US$1,000 per oz., silver hovered at US$17 per oz. and copper was strong at around US$2.75 per lb. Those strong prices may have helped buoy the Venture board, but more than anything the frenzy of buying appeared to be more a matter of investor hunger, and gold assets looked to be the best way to satiate that appetite.
CanAsia Industries shares more than doubled, jumping 19.5¢ to 37.5¢, on news of drilling visible gold. The company reported that 6 of 15 holes in its second phase of drilling showed the golden sheen at its Clone property, 18 km southeast of Stewart, B. C. The intercepts with visible gold came from four parallel shear zones CanAsia has been targeting on the property.
Likewise, Mexivada Mining created a buzz flying 11¢ to 21¢ on news of a prospective intrusive body at its Goldstorm property in Nevada. Though it hasn’t drilled the target, Mexivada says the intrusive diatreme volcanic pipe, which, at surface, has sampled as high as 39 grams gold per tonne, shares a geological likeness to Kinross Gold’s Fruta del Norte and Newmont Mining’s Twin Creeks/Midas deposits. Mexivada is mapping and sampling the intrusive and says it wants to have more results out in the next 30 days.
Gold assets did not dominate, however. Other notables included: Coal-finder Goldsource Mines, up 50¢ to $2.27; Apoquindo Minerals, primarily a copper explorer, up 22¢ to 91¢; and Rare Element Resources, rose 66¢ to $4.20.
Still, amidst the rush upwards, some fell. One of the hardest hit was Noront Resources, down 44¢ to $1.75. Though the fall came on drill results from the company’s Eagle Nest deposit at the Mc-Fauld’s Lake property in northern Ontario, the decline may have been less the result of disappointment in the drill results than
a case of share-price settling after a meteoric rise from under 75¢ in July to high as $3 in August. Deep intercepts included 54.7 metres grading 2.31% nickel, 1.43 grams platinum and 5.77 grams per tonne palladium.
Others in negative territory were Chesapeake Gold, off 41¢ to $4.29, South-Gobi Energy Resources, down 36¢ to $12.14, Maudore Minerals, minus 30¢ to $2.10, and Mantra Mining, which lost 22¢ to 81¢.
