TSX Venture Exchange – November 24-30

After making aggressive gains for much of November, the S&P/TSX Venture Composite index ended the month off with a bit of breather. For the Nov. 24-30 trading period, the Venture board lost a sober 1.57 points to close the month out at 1,415.06 points. Market activity was slow in comparison with the past couple of months, with daily volume averaging 108.6 million shares. Volume on one day, Nov. 26, was as little as about 81 million shares. But as they might say, today’s low is yesterday’s high. Just six months ago, 81 million would have been described as a blistering pace.

Strong commodities continued to power the markets. Gold courted US$1,200 an oz. for a second week in a row; silver was around US$18 per oz.; copper remained over US$3 per lb.; and zinc and lead held above US$1 per lb. Those prices helped propel 100 companies to 52-week highs. Just a fifth of that number dipped to yearly lows.

One of the leaders of the gold pack during the five-day period was Mirasol Resources. Lifting Mirasol was news out of Patagonia. Mirasol’s joint-venture partner in Argentina on its Joaquin property in Santa Cruz province, Coeur d’Alene Mines, hit as much as 25.4 metres grading 1,164 grams silver per tonne at the La Negra target. Mirasol gained an admirable 54¢ to $1.23. Added good news for Mirasol, and many other property owners in Santa Cruz province, was the provincial government’s designation of a large swath of Santa Cruz as a zone of special interest for mining. Joaquin falls into that mining zone.

Another gold hound was International Tower Hill Mines, which continued to devour all-time share-price highs. News of a partial scoping study for oxide mineralization at its Livengood gold project in Alaska helped boost its shares 76¢ to $7.74. The scoping study envisions a whopper of a heap-leach operation with production of nearly half a million oz. gold a year for 13 years. A full scoping study with an outline of a flotation component for the project’s sulphides is expected in 2010. All told, Livengood’s indicated resource stands at 525 million tonnes grading 0.65 gram gold per tonne for about 11 million contained ounces gold.

Expectations for another bulk-tonnage gold mine pushed Chesapeake Gold up 96¢ to $6.76. Chesapeake is working on a scoping study for its flagship Metates gold project in Mexico, where it has pegged measured and indicated resources at 703 million tonnes grading 0.65 gram gold per tonne for nearly 15 million oz. gold.

Continuing an upward surge from what was a 25¢ share-price range for most of 2009, Freewest Resources Canada gained 12¢ to 76¢. Spurring interest in Freewest is a battle to take it over being fought by Noront Resources and Cliffs Natural Resources. At stake are Freewest’s base metal and chromite assets and the question now is which company has the resolve to win them.
