The New Year got off to a good start when, on the first trading day of 2010, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index registered their highest closes in 15 months and the Nasdaq ended at a 16-month high. For the Dec. 22-Jan. 4 reporting period as a whole, the DJIA rose 119.03 points to finish at 10,583.96, while the S&P 500 index climbed 14.97 points to 1,132.99. News on Jan. 4 that the manufacturing sector in the United States grew at its quickest pace in almost four years in December, the fifth month in a row of expansion, buoyed U.S. equities — in particular energy and base metal stocks. Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton were the top two value gainers in the Dec. 22-Jan. 4 reporting period, rising US$19.94 to US$224.11 and US$7.04 to US$79.57, respectively. Alcoa was the most actively traded stock; the aluminum giant closed the reporting period with an advance of US92¢ per share to US$16.65.
On the energy front, Consol Energy bolted US$4.53 per share to US$52.95 on news that its board had approved a 2010 capital budget of US$1 billion, almost half of which has been designated to strengthen the company’s natural gas production capabilities. About US$400 million or 40% of the coal miner’s budget has been earmarked for CNX Gas Corp. to boost exploration in Marcellus Shale, a geological formation that extends from West Virginia to New York state. Consol Energy is a major shareholder in CNX Gas. An additional $500 million in the budget will be funneled into the Pittsburgh-based company’s coal programs.
The New York spot price for gold advanced US$37.70 per oz. in the Dec. 22-Jan. 4 reporting period, closing at US$1,120.90 per oz. The Amex Gold Bugs index gained 21.78 points to 444.82, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index mounted 8.07 points to 174.02. Barrick Gold was the second most actively traded stock, climbing US$1.43 to US$40.39. In terms of value, ASA(Bermuda), a closed-end, non-diversified investment company investing in precious metals, platinum group metals and diamonds, jumped US$6.36 to US$79.56 per share.
