As more than 20,000 delegates from over 100 countries attended the 78th Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto this week, a question looming large on many peoples’ minds was: How strong is the current economic rebound and how long will it last? No doubt they also wondered whether the best of the stock market rally is over. During the March 2-8 period, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 146.54 points or 1.41% to close at 10,552.52, while the S&P 500 index climbed 20.19 points or 1.81% to finish at 1,138.50. The Nasdaq Composite increased 51.42 points or 2.26% to 2,332.21.
Large diversified miners and energy stocks were the biggest gainers during the period. Rio Tinto topped the value list with an advance of US$13.84 per share to close at US$224.50, following news on March 1 that it had completed divestments of US$10 billion, with more than US$7 billion of that having been completed since the beginning of 2009, predominantly for cash. Divestments passed the US$10-billion mark with Rio Tinto’s sale of its Alcan Packaging Food Americas division to Bemis Company for US$1.2 billion. Rio Tinto also announced that it had agreed to acquire 15 million shares in Ivanhoe Mines at a subscription price of $16.31 per share, increasing its ownership in Ivanhoe by 2.7% to 22.4%.
BHP Billiton took second spot with an advance of US$5.07 per share to US$79.31. BHP announced on March 8 that it had reached terms for a significant portion of its hard coking coal volumes for 2010, “based on a structural change to shorter term market based pricing for the contract period.” The company reached agreement with customers throughout Europe, China, India and Japan.
On the energy front, Massey Energy climbed US$4.24 to US$48.78, while Patriot Coal was up US$3.05 per share to US$21.13 apiece. Patriot announced annual revenues for 2009 of US$2 billion, up a year-on-year 24%, while EBITDA reached US$110.7 million, up 150% over 2008. Patriot Coal produces and markets coal in the eastern U.S., with 14 mining complexes in Appalachia and the Illinois basin.
