Technical Sessions (November 08, 2010)

OFFICIAL OPENING AND 2010 BRITISH COLUMBIA, ALASKA, YUKON, ALBERTA AND MANITOBA EXPLORATION REVIEWS

Monday, January 24 8:30-11:30 a.m.

In addition to the opening ceremonies, this session will provide British Columbia, Alaska, Yukon, Alberta and Manitoba exploration reviews.

A SOLID 10,000-FOOT VIEW OF PORPHYRIES

Monday, January 24 2:30-5 p.m.

Porphyry-style deposits continue to be the focus of geologists worldwide. In this session, we will attempt to summarize modern exploration techniques and discuss how they are being applied within the Cordillera and beyond. It is essential for mineral explorers to be aware of modern mining methods, which will allow for the effective development of these large-scale deposits. A number of case studies will provide a better understanding of these giants and enhance our appreciation of what will undoubtedly lead to tomorrow’s discoveries.

PUBLIC GEOSCIENCE: INVESTING IN TOMORROW’S DISCOVERIES

Tuesday, January 25 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Public geoscience programs provide an important foundation for developing new concepts and knowledge of geology and mineral potential. This work, conducted by dedicated and experienced professionals, encourages new mineral exploration activity and helps in the successful targeting of mineral-related investments. Geoscientists from the British Columbia Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, Geoscience BC and the Yukon Geological Survey will present recent successes from field and research programs throughout the Canadian Cordillera.

Talks will highlight results from current Cordilleran bedrock and surficial mapping initiatives and interpretations of geophysical and geochemical datasets and compilation projects, and present new insights into the economic geology and mineral deposits of the Canadian Cordillera. Virtually all new public geoscience data is delivered online through world-class tools such as MapPlace and MapMaker Online.

BRITISH COLUMBIA, YUKON AND ALASKA:

MINERAL EXPLORATION AND MINING HIGHLIGHTS

Tuesday, January 25 2:30-5 p.m.

The Cordillera of British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska is host to a number of world-class ore bodies. It continues to attract significant mineral investment, particularly in exploration for porphyries (alkali and calc-alkalic Cu-Au and Cu-Mo); gold (epithermal, shear zone and intrusion-related); and base and precious metal-enriched VMS deposits. Presentations in this session will showcase some of the highlights of recent mineral exploration and development activities.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY –STANDARDS, REPORTING …AND THE JOURNEY TO ENLIGHTENMENT

Wednesday, January 26 8:30-11:30 a.m.

This session will outline the current corporate social responsibility (CSR) landscape for extractive companies operating in Canada and internationally. It will provide examples of junior companies that have successfully met CSR standards (how to do it; how much it costs) and outline a no-nonsense method for reporting on your efforts (how to tell your story in two pages or less). Attendees will also get to hear one geologist’s “journey to CSR enlightenment”. This session will appeal to industry members who are interested in learning how to safeguard people, property and assets in this rapidly changing climate.

CANADIAN EXPLORATION HIGHLIGHTS

Wednesday, January 26 2:30-5 p.m.

The continuing uncertainty in global markets has translated into volatility in the commodity sector. Exploration budgets have expanded from last year, and companies have made new discoveries or continued developing properties. This session looks at some of the Canadian projects that have excited the industry and market during 2010.

INTERNATIONAL EXPLORATION SUCCESSES

Thursday, January 27 8:15-11:30 a.m.

Since mid-08, mineral explorers have shrugged off stock market wobbles, skittish investors and threats of higher resource extraction-related taxes to deliver and advance new discoveries around the world. This session, a regular and popular fixture at Roundup, will again showcase mineral exploration activities that have generated regular positive headlines through 2010. Many projects presented in this session at previous Roundups have gone on to become mines or fallen prey to a bid. Which project in the current suite will be the first to succumb to an acquisition?

COMMODITY REVIEW: BURGEONING HUNGER OR SATIATED APPETITE?

Thursday, January 27 2:30-5 p.m.

Driven by resurgent equity prices and merger and acquisition activity, commodities have once again become front and centre for investors. Debate rages on about the sustainability of the demand for commodities, and whether global consumption can continue to expand in response to growth across Asia and emerging economies. The question is, Will demand expansion continue or are commodity prices going to be tethered by global economic concerns?
