U.S. equities jumped on Nov. 29, with a positive employment report. Better-than-expected data from the U.S. Labor Department showed the country added 203,000 jobs to non-farm payrolls in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 7% — a five-year low. Nevertheless, the markets ended an eight-week winning streak, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 0.41%, or 66.21 points, to 16,020.20, and the S&P 500 down 0.04%, or a 0.72 point, to 1,805.09. The Philadelphia Gold & Silver Index fell 6.55%, or 5.66 points, to 80.80.
Rio Tinto shares climbed US79¢ to US$53.84 per share. The company updated shareholders at an investment seminar in Sydney on Dec. 3, noting that in the 10 months leading to October, it delivered a US$1.8-billion improvement in operating costs and is on track to achieve its US$2-billion target for 2013. Rio also cut spending on exploration and evaluation during the 10-month period by US$800 million — exceeding its US$750-million target. The company forecasts capital expenditures this year will come in at below US$14 billion — a 20% reduction compared to 2012 — and says that by year-end it will have announced or completed US$3.3 billion in non-core asset divestments.
Mountain Province Diamonds was up 10%, or US49¢ per share to US$5.31, on news that the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board has approved a land-use permit for the Gahcho Kué diamond mine, which allows the company and its joint-venture partner and operator De Beers Canada to start land-based site works for deliveries planned for the winter road season in 2014. The approval allows full construction, after Gahcho Kué receives the full land-use permit and water licence expected in 2014.
Gahcho Kué is expected to have an 11-year mine life and extract 32 million tonnes containing 49 million carats. The partners are updating a 2010 feasibility study, and the companies should announce the results of an optimization study early next year.
