Gold should be considered a critical mineral due to its essential role in modern electronics, says Canadian mining luminary Robert Quartermain.
Quartermain advocates that recognizing gold as a critical mineral could help access new sources of finance, help speed up mining projects and help technology advance.
In conversation with The Northern Miner’s western editor, Henry Lazenby, during last month’s AME Roundup event in Vancouver, Quartermain underlines the urgency of accelerating mining project timelines. He suggests that improved cooperation among federal and provincial governments and with Indigenous communities could accelerate mining growth, thereby ensuring a steady supply of critical minerals into the energy transition economy.
Quartermain, an industry champion for diversity and inclusivity, held the position of executive chairman at Pretium Resources, a company he founded in October 2010. Under his leadership, Pretium developed the high-grade Brucejack gold project in British Columbia, which later attracted an acquisition by Newcrest Mining, now Newmont (NYSE: NEM), for $2.8 billion in March 2022.
