Mine approval times are to be shortened without changing environmental standards in new Ontario regulations to be delivered next week, provincial Mines Minister George Pirie says in a new video.
“Obviously it can’t take 15 to 17 years to permit a mine,” Pirie said in an interview in Toronto this month. “There’s an urgency to it. We have to get these mines built.”
Pirie, a mining industry veteran who was the head of Placer Dome when it was acquired by Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX; NYSE: GOLD) in 2006, spoke with The Northern Miner‘s Colin McClelland at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s annual convention.
