Quebec supports mining with hydro-power, streamlined permits and beneficial tax policies, an adviser to the province says.

Early government action gives it an edge in the energy transition, Jonathan LaFontaine, with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests, explained in London last month. He cited Quebec’s renewable electricity and innovation hubs, like the Bécancour battery campus and the North Shore green steel initiative, as examples.

“Quebec’s updated Mining Act simplifies the path for developers and improves transparency,” he said during The Northern Miner’s International Metals Symposium.

Investissement Québec manages the province’s investment fund. It provides tailored financial support for mining projects. Recent reforms aim to cut permitting times and align agencies with developers.
