Seventeen Canadian gold mining projects have been given the green light to go into production which, combined, will add almost a million ounces of gold to the country’s annual output.
All but five of the projects are scheduled to begin production in 1987 with one, the Star Lake gold mine owned by Saskatchewan Mining Development Corp. and Starrex Mining, already having turned out some bullion (N.M., Feb 9/87).
The projects represent every province except Alberta and Prince Edward Island. Ontario is host to six of the projects representing 379,500 oz of the total 948,500 oz of potential annual production. No projects in the Yukon Territory or the Northwest Territories have been given final approval to go into production. One of the largest of the projects is a tailings recovery project in Timmins, Ont., being undertaken by ERG Resources. It is expe cted to produce 100,000 oz annually when it starts production in late 1988.
The following table, based on a 457-page study by Metals Economic Group of Boulder, Colo., lists the 17 projects that have been given a positive production decision, including the Star Lake mine.
Metals Economics Group $1,100(US)-study, based on information available up to mid- December, surveys 133 advanced stage Canadian gold projects providing their current status, recent history and future plans. The Northern Miner has updated some of the information including production decisions made since then.
