1991 expenditures drop in Ontario

Exploration expenditures in Ontario for 1991 are estimated to be $124 million, compared with $141 million in 1990 and $218 million in 1989, says Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

Mine-site development expenditures are estimated to total $232 million, compared with $279 million in 1990 and $342 million in 1989. There were 52 mines operating in Ontario in 1991; 17 gold mines, 18 base metal mines, 13 industrial mineral operations and four others. Nine mines closed in 1991: three gold mines — Renabie at Missanabie, Bell Creek at Timmins and the Eastmaque tailings project at Kirkland Lake; four nickel mines in the Sudbury area — Creighton, Whistle, Garson and the original Falconbridge main mine; the Lyon Lake zinc-copper mine near Ignace; and the Roseval silica operation near Timmins.

Four development stage projects were under way during 1991: three nickel-copper projects at Sudbury and a gold project in the Kirkland Lake area.

Eighteen underground or open pit advanced stage projects were active in the province including 13 gold projects.
