250 idled at Kidd Creek

Falconbridge will lay off 250 workers at its Kidd Creek complex in Timmins, Ont.

A downturn in base metal prices has caused the layoffs, according to the company, a unit of Noranda (TSE) and Trelleborg of Sweden.

The layoffs will take effect in mid-September, although some workers may choose early retirement and severance packages.

This move comes on the heels of an earlier announcement that Falconbridge is extending its summer shutdowns in Sudbury to reduce zinc concentrate production to 500,000 tonnes this year, 13% less than in 1992.
