50 Years Ago – The Northern Miner, August 1940

NOT A STRIKE IN CANADA

A most significant announcement has been made by the Dept. of Labour in Ottawa, which reports that there was not a single strike or lockout in progress in Canada at the end of June.

A democratic people has achieved by peaceful and democratic means the objective which a Mussolini could only enforce by machine guns, imprisonings and banishments.

BRALORNE’S NEVADA SUBSIDIARY SHOWS OPERATING PROFIT

Bralorne Mines is doing well from its investment in the Summit King mine, its wholly owned subsidiary in Nevada, according to statistics published this week in U.S. publications.

During April, 1940, the Summit King mill treated 1,731 tons of ore. Mill heads averaged 0.214 oz. gold and 19.70 oz. silver. The average assay of tails was 0.026 oz. gold and 1.04 oz. silver, leaving a calculated recovery of 0.188 oz. gold and 17.66 oz. silver per ton.

RECORD PROGRESS AT PAYMASTER

With production at the highest rate in its history, Paymaster Porcupine Mines is experiencing a corresponding increase in prosperity. There has been little change in the gold content per ton milled as compared with a year ago. Some additional tonnage is being mined.

AUNOR PRODUCTION JUMPS SHARPLY

Predictions which appeared in a mid-July issue of The Northern Miner, of a sharply increased rate of production at Aunor Gold Mines (Noranda’s new Porcupine subsidiary), were fully verified by final production returns for the month just closed, it was learned at midweek.

Marking an all-time high for the property, the value of gold poured at Aunor in July was close to $200,000, The Northern Miner understands, as compared with a rate of about $135,000 monthly. The mill treated 12,390 tons during the month, so that the average recovery was in excess of $16 per ton.

NEW ORE DISCLOSED AT BONETAL

Evidence of a new phase of activity for the East Porcupine area made its appearance this week with the announcement of results from diamond drilling by Bonetal Gold Mines. This is the former Porcupine Creek property and adjoins Hallnor Gold Mines.

Hole No. 12 consisted of two intersections, one yielding a core length of seven feet assaying 1.04 oz. uncut.

UPPER LEVELS STILL FACTOR AT DOME

With one machine in the No. 6 inside shaft area and a small maintenance crew comprising the entire working force on all operations below the tenth level at Dome Mines, exploration efforts are now being concentrated on the third, fifth and sixth levels.

BUFFALO ANKERITE ORE RESERVE UP

Buffalo Ankerite Gold Mines increased the tonnage of its ore reserves to a substantial degree during the first six months of 1940, the company’s semi-annual report shows. Average grade was somewhat lower than at the close of last year, but total value was much higher.

FIRST GOLD BRICK FROM PANDORA

Shareholders of Pandora Cadillac, at their annual meeting at New Liskeard last Friday, were told by President W.A. Taylor that first production reports had come from their property. A bar worth $12,000 had been produced, representing the first half-month’s operation.
