Agnico-Eagle Mines (TSE) has just celebrated the pouring of the millionth ounce of gold at its Eagle-Telbel mine at Joutel, Que. Over 500 people attended the affair, which was videotaped and replayed in the local hockey arena. The arena was decorated with photographs from first construction and pictures of employees plus awards the company has won for safety and innovations.
Celebrants included all Agnico employees and their families from Joutel, mine managers and other key employees from both its LaRonde mine and its silver division as well as the head office.
Tribute was paid to the company’s president, Paul Penna, who is singularly responsible for the success not only of the Joutel operation, but for the company’s newest gold mine, the 2,000 ton-per-day Donald J. LaRonde mine at Cadillac, Que.
Penna was named The Northern Miner’s Mining Man Of The Year in 1985 largely for his perseverance and legendary belief in the Joutel mine.
Although it has taken 15 years to reach the million-ounce club, with the addition of its new LaRonde mine (former Dumagami), Agnico expects to pour its second millionth ounce within six years, Penna tells The Northern Miner.
