Alusaf smelter enters production

The Alusaf Hillside aluminum smelter, built by a joint venture involving Canadian-based SNC-Lavalin, has started production five months ahead of schedule and under its $2-billion budget.

Situated in Richards Bay, South Africa, about 160 km from the city of Durban in Natal province, the smelter is scheduled to reach full capacity of 46,000 tonnes by spring, 1996.

It is owned by a consortium of South African companies, which includes mining company Gencor, the Industrial Development Corp., and electricity utility Eskom.

The smelter is one of the largest engineering and construction projects ever undertaken by SNC-Lavalin. It uses the same advanced Pechiney AP 30 technology as is used in Quebec’s Alouette and Lauralco smelters.

Construction was managed by a team that among whom were 7,000 workers (at peak), including 40 employees of SNC-Lavalin.
