Striking workers at Anglo American Platinum’s base and precious metals refineries in Rustenburg, South Africa, have returned to work after a court ruled the strikes were illegal.
This follows a ruling, only weeks ago, in favour of the unions, which are fighting management over unilateral changes made to the medical aid plan. The roughly 300 union members object to changes that would reportedly limit workers’ choices when selecting doctors.
The court ruled that the metal refinery did not have the right to change the workers’ medical aid package without their consent.
