Annual Coal Review 1987 COAL REPORT TECK CORP-BULLMOOSE

The Bullmoose multiple-seam open pit coal mine is near Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia. Metallurgical coal is sold to nine Japanese customers under 15-year contracts. The contracted quantity is 1.7 million tonnes per year, plus or minus 5% at the buyer’s option. During the 1986 coal year, buyers opted for minus 5% of contracted volume. However , average sales for the 198 6 calendar year will be close to 1.75 million tonnes because of higher sales in the first quarter associated with the 1985 coal year.

For the year ending December, 1986, the pit moved 12 million bank cu m of waste and delivered 2.5 million tonnes of raw metallurgical coal to the wash plant. From that, 1.8 million tonnes of clean coal were produced and railed to the port. From start-up, late in 1983, comparable statistics to the end of December, 19 86, show pit waste at close to 43 million bcm, raw coal 8.1 million tonnes and c lean coal at 5.8 million tonnes. The thermal coal market prices are severely dep ressed and Bullmoose decided not to sell any thermal coal during 1986. There are now 425 employees at the mine site.
