For the fourth consecutive month, a new record level was established on the Toronto Stock Exchange for share volume traded in any one month.

In April, shares traded rose to 761.4 million, a 3.1% increase over the 738.6 million shares traded in March, and were 30.9% higher compared with April, 1986.

Dollar value traded reached $10.38 billion, the second highest month on record. This represents a slight decrease of 0.5% over the record $10.4 billion traded in the previous month and is higher by 7.2% than April, 1986.

For the first four months of this year, cumulative figures are well ahead of last year. Total volume traded has increased by 36.3% to 2.7 billion compared with two billion shares traded in the same period a year ago.

Dollar value traded has increased by 44.7% to $39.1 billion vs. the $27 billion traded in the first four months of 1986.
