Asarco honored for cleanup

The voluntary environmental cleanup of the Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex near Lincoln, Mont., has earned Asarco an award from the Lewis and Clark Cty. Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

The award was presented in recognition of the company’s efforts in the conversion of waste material, the reduction of iron content in streams, and the cleanup of historic waste sites.

Robert Novotny, Asarco’s vice-president for lead, zinc, silver and mineral operations accepted the award on behalf of the company.

He acknowledged the participation of: Arco (a private company); the Lincoln Community Council; the Lewis and Clarke County Commission; and the Montana Dept. of Environmental Quality.

Asarco is currently involved with the voluntary cleanup of tailings at the historic Blackhawk concentrator in New Mexico, in addition to working with state and local health departments to identify and treat children with high lead levels.
