Asarco resolves issues with EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reached an agreement with Asarco (AR-N) concerning environmental issues at two of the company’s operations.

The major has agreed to spend US$61.5 million on new capital projects at the Ray copper mine in Hayden, Ariz., as well as improve environmental performance at its lead smelter in East Helena, Mont. The agreement, which follows two years of negotiations, also calls for payment of US$6.4 million in penalties.
