Nickel-bearing waste material from the U.S. is the focus of a recycling deal between Inco and Calgary’s ATC Environmental Group.
Beginning in the first quarter, Inco’s smelters in Sudbury, Ont., will receive monthly shipments of custom feed stock materials from ATC.
The more than 120,000 tons of metal-bearing waste traditionally have been sent to landfills in California. The byproduct is being supplied by about 15 U.S.-based producers of computer components and electroplating technology.
ATC projects 1996 revenues of $2.5-3 million for the project, which will be derived from fees charged to waste suppliers and the sale of recovered material.
Los Angeles-based Chem Tech Systems has been contracted by ATC to act as the exclusive agent for the collection and shipment of the waste to Canadian smelters. Chem Tech will also design nickel and copper feedstocks for smelters from the byproducts.
