Although the Murrin Murrin nickel-cobalt project near Lenora, Australia, is not expected to enter production until early 1998, other nickel producers are watching the project closely, as its processing design will incorporate a pressure acid-leach technique owned by Sherritt.
The laterite deposit hosts 120 million tonnes grading 1.14% nickel and 0.07% cobalt per tonne. Owner Anaconda Nickel has carried out test work at Sherritt’s pilot plant to advance the project to the feasibility stage.
