Aussie prof at U of T

Renowned Australian geologist Roussos Dimitrakopoulos will teach a 3-day course at the University of Toronto’s Lassonde Institute in June.

The professor and director of the WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre in Brisbane will discuss risk assessment in recoverable reserves and mine planning.

Applied simulation models and computer workshops will be used.

Dimitrakopoulos, who holds a PhD in geostatistics from cole Polytechnique in Montreal, was a senior geostatistician with Newmont Mining. He also taught geostatisics at McGill University.

The cost of the course is $1,350 for those who register before May 18; after that date, the cost rises to $1,550. Enrolment is limited to 18 persons.

Prospecting school honours Warren

The British Columbia & Yukon Chamber of Mines has adopted a new name for its prospecting school. The H.V. Warren School of Prospecting is named in memory of Harry Warren, a prominent professor of geology who taught there for more than 50 years.

The school, now in its 81st year, is co-sponsored by the University of British Columbia, the province’s Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada.

The school provides an introduction to geology and mineral deposits, as well as training in the identification of rocks and minerals. Prospecting techniques are also taught.

CIM, CMP swing into golf season

The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM) and the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) are accepting reservations for their annual golf tournament, scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Georgetown Golf Club, 25 km west of Toronto.

The entry fee is $90 for those who register before May 31; $110 for those who register after that date. The price includes green fees, power cart and dinner.
