According to a Melbourne-based mining consulting firm, Australia is on-track to produce a record 290 tonnes of gold this year, up from 253.7 tonnes in 1995.
The country produced 73 tonnes of the yellow metal for the quarter ended Sept. 30, the second-highest quarterly output it has ever achieved. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, Australia produced 217.5 tonnes.
The value of gold produced in the third quarter was A$1.1 billion, and it is estimated that gold production in 1996 will approach A$4.5 billion in value.
Kalgoorlie’s Super Pit, where higher grades boosted production by 28% to 172,288 oz. during the quarter, remained the largest gold operation Down Under.
Production at the St. Ives mine remained steady over the quarter, at 103,500 oz., while output at Telfer, the country’s third-largest operation, topped 99,190 oz., for an increase of 13% over the previous quarter.
Production at the Bronzewing mine was 13% lower at 72,317 oz., while output at the Boddington operation fell 25% over the previous quarter to 69,484 oz.
