BC approves rock quarry

The government of British Columbia has approved a $100-million aggregate quarry near Port Alberni.

The proposed quarry is designed to produce 6 million tonnes of construction aggregate per year and is expected to become one of the largest in Canada.

According to the government, the quarry will provide construction aggregate for as many as 100 years and create about 80 jobs.

The original proposal included a quarry, plant site, stockpiling areas, and conveyors, along with a ship-loading facility. Aggregates will be shipped to the ready-mix concrete and asphalt paving markets along the west coast of North America, chiefly in California.

The quarry will be operated by Eagle Rock Materials, a joint venture among the Hupacasath First Nation, the Ucluelet First Nation, and privately owned Polaris Minerals.
