BC claims second Claim Tag award

For the second consecutive year, the government of British Columbia has received the Claim Tag Award from the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). This year’s award recognizes the Mineral Titles online program, which will be launched in January 2005.

Mineral Titles is a system for administering mineral titles which allows miners to view maps of British Columbia on the Internet and secure tenure simply by clicking on the desired area.

The Claim Tag Award recognizes jurisdictions that have gone out of their way to support mineral exploration. “The award reflects government’s commitment to unleashing mining and mineral exploration across B.C.,” says Richard Neufeld, the province’s energy minister. “The new online titles system will provide a greater degree of certainty for claim-holders by defining the location of new claims.”

The program also allows users to carry out transactions such as payments and transfers of ownership; it in effect eliminates the need to mark a mineral claim on the ground before claiming title.

Training programs are being developed to help people use the online system. There are 58 government offices and two mineral title offices to provide assistance and access to computers.

Last year, British Columbia received the Claim Tag Award in recognition of the Rocks-to-Riches program, an arrangement with the federal government and the Yukon Chamber of Mines for the dissemination of geoscience information.
