Fighting the remote, harsh Newfoundland environment and a tight schedule, Bechtel Canada Engineers says it is determined to see the Hope Brook Gold project brought into initial production in just over a year.
Bechtel, which is providing engineering, procurement and construction management services for all surface facilities, started site preparation last September for Hope Brook, a subsidiary of BP Selco. The mine, on the southwest coast of the province, is the largest gold mine now being developed in the country (N.M., Aug 4/86).
“We are pushing to finish the construction camp before winter sets in,” Edward Dorr, Bechtel’s construction manager, said. “Once winter arrives, snow, heavy fog, rain and high winds become the way of life.”
The project’s heap leaching plant is targeted for operation in August, 1987, and the conventional mill for October, 1988. Once completed, the mine will be the biggest heap leaching operation in Canada.
