A landslide apparently triggered by indiscriminate mining and blasting recently left at least 78 people dead and 44 hurt, according to a UPI story of a Press Trust of India report.
The accident occurred at Hlimen Hill, on the outskirts of the Mizoram state capital of Aizawl, 1,600 km southeast of here.
Press Trust reported that some 28 square metres of the hill collapsed, sweeping away 17 buildings and two labor camps. A state government official put the death toll at 70.
More than 1,000 rescue workers responded, but heavy rains and fresh landslides slowed and ultimately halted their progress.
