Innovation in Mining Backfill Technology is an excellent snapshot of the state-of-the-art of mining backfill worldwide. It consists of papers presented in a symposium at McGill University in Montreal, Que., last October. For the fourth time since 1973, researchers from around the world gathered to discuss the subject. Research into the many aspects of backfill is being conducted at Mount Isa Mines in Australia, Boliden Mineral’s Nasliden mine in Sweden, coal mines in Poland, the Cannon mine in Wenatchee, Wash., and Gold Fields’ mines in South Africa. Results of the studies were given together with data from several Canadian mining operations.
University research work was also presented. Participating institutes included Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., McGill University, University of Waterloo, Ont., the University of Tokyo and Akita University in Japan, the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales in Australia, Hacettepe University in Turkey, Sweden’s Lulea University of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in India and the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, Johannesburg, South Africa.
