For the second year in a row, uranium miner Cameco has won the National John T. Ryan Safety Award (metal category). The company was recently honoured for its safety record at the Rabbit Lake mine, whereas, last year, the McArthur River mine and Key Lake mill claimed the trophy. All three operations are in northern Saskatchewan.
The awards were presented at the recent meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), held in Quebec City.
Other winners include Atlanta, Ga.-based Georgia-Pacific, which operates a gypsum mine in Nova Scotia, and Luscar’s Sheerness coal mine, near Calgary, Alta.
The average reportable injury rate among award winners has dropped 40% in the past five years.
The Ryan Safety competition began in 1941.
