Canadian leaders in policy debate at Colorado school

In an effort to determine the real causes of mining’s current malais e both here and in the U.S., the Colorado School of Mines is mounting a 3-day conference early next year which will deal with the issues of public policy and the competitiveness of U.S. and Canadian metals production.

To be held Jan 27-30 in Golden, Colo., the conference is being sponsored by Canada’s federal Ministry of Energy, Mines and Resources (public policy sector), and the U.S. Department of the Interior, (Bureau of Mines).

It will feature 10 specially commissioned papers by recognized mineral economists, commentary by mining industry leaders from both countries, and a final-session panel of experts to assess the major issues of the conference.

Among speakers and panelists from Canada will be George Miller, managing director of the Mining Association of Canada, K. C. Hendrick, president of Noranda Minerals, Dr David Anderson, executive director of the Centre for Resource Studies, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ont., and Dr Keith Brewer, director-general, economic and financial policy branch, mineral policy sector, EMR, Ottawa.

The impressive group of U.S. participants will include Harry M. Conger, chairman of Homestake Mining, and chairman of the American Mining Congress.
