Canyon clears hurdle with Briggs

The Interior Board of Land Appeals has denied a request for a stay of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) permit for the Briggs project in southeastern California.

In July, the BLM approved the final environmental impact statement and plan of operations for the project. The action by the board of appeals clears the way for construction at the mine site.

In August, the Inyo Cty. Board of Supervisors rejected appeals made to the reclamation plan. The appeals to the county, together with the BLM permits, were filed by a local environmental group and the Timbisha Shoshone Indian tribe.

Canyon has a letter of commitment with Banque Paribas whereby Paribas will provide US$15 million in funding and arrange for syndication with other banks to provide US$34 million in a credit facility to cover the costs of construction.

Construction is expected to begin in November at the Briggs project, where gold production should average 75,000 oz. gold per year.
