LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY and MIRARCO

Laurentian University is located in Sudbury, at the heart of Ontario’s hard-rock mining industry. Laurentian is undertaking a major initiative to build on and strengthen its research and development contributions to the mining industry. Part of this initiative involved the creation of the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCo). The focus of this corporation is the development and translation of research knowledge into practical technology that supports sustainable mining practices.

The Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC), established in 1987, is a self-sustaining business centre of MIRARCO. Its mission is to conduct engineering research in support of the mineral resource sector through excellence in geomechanics, including product development, technology transfer, and provision of technical services, GRC conducts research within Canada and internationally with a staff of world class engineers and scientists.

Director

Geomechanics Research Center

The Director of the Geomechanics Research Centre will lead R&D initiatives in geomechanics and mine design. The Director will be a forward-looking entrepreneurial researcher, who can create opportunities and have the ability to develop relationships with public and private sector partners. Qualified candidates will have an earned graduate degree (preferably a Ph.D.) a demonstrated track record in attracting funded research and development projects and experience working on projects with significant industry participation. A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in consulting, mining or the civil engineering is required.

Geotechnical or Ground Control Engineer

As in the past, the GRC considers the mines as the geomechanics research laboratory and strives to undertake R&D projects in the mines. The centre is looking for a field engineer to work with the new director to lead and execute these projects. Qualified candidates will have an engineering degree (preferably a graduate degree) and at least 3 years of practical engineering experience in consulting, mining, or the geotechnical engineering.

Engineering Software Development Specialist

One of MIRARCo’s goal is to transfer research findings to the user via engineering software tools, For the purpose, we are looking for a specialist that develops and leads the implementation of a software development strategy. Qualified candidates will have a graduate degree and at least 3 years of software development experience. Applicants must be familiar with software used in mining and must be a skilled programmer familiar with modern programming language.
