Carlin’s underground to be studied at Elko Expo

The newly formed Western Underground Mining Association (WUMA) will present the first Underground Mining conference, to be held June 18-19, during the 13th Elko Mining Expo in Elko, Nev.

The conference will highlight the growing importance of underground mining in the Carlin trend and Nevada in .

“Many of the issues in underground mining are common to us all in the area, and it is our purpose to share information on these issues,” says WUMA Chairman Gil Sargent.

Rather than centering on formal papers, the format of the conference is designed to facilitate the free exchange of practical experiences.

The first day of the proceedings will feature brief descriptions by representatives from each of the 11 underground mines in the area, including those owned by Barrick Gold, Newmont Gold, Getchell Gold, Hecla Mining, Independence Mining and the Midas joint venture. Characteristics of each operation will be discussed, and time will be allotted for questions.

The second day will feature round-table discussions on technology, productivity improvements, mining equipment and cement backfill techniques.

Issues such as quality assurance, design team concepts and safety will also be discussed.
