Vancouver – The consolidation in the mining industry is not just restricted to the metal producers as service providers are also seeking ways to improve their bottom line in the shrinking sector. In the latest move, Australian-based ALS Chemex has acquired the Bondar Clegg laboratory group.
The details of the acquisition, which took effect Dec. 1 where not released. Bondar Clegg is a major assay laboratory with analytical service facilities in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.
Overlapping facilities, such as those in Vancouver, will be merged. According to a Chemex statement, the majority of the management and client service staff from both Bondar Clegg and ALS Chemex will retain their jobs.
The newest acquisition marks a continuing growth trend for ALS, which began operations in Queensland, Australia in 1974 to provide geochemical services to the mineral resources sector. By the end of 1995, the minerals division had 14 laboratories throughout Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. The 1996 acquisition of Geolab SA added an additional six laboratories in Chile, Argentina and Peru, to the fold. In 1999, ALS merged its minerals division with the mineral laboratories of Chemex Labs, adding laboratories in Canada, USA, and Mexico to the growing global network.
