Clifton Mining has been selected as a 1998 Earth Day Award winner by the Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining, in recognition of the company’s reclamation work at its Herat mine in Tooele Cty.
Clifton’s reclamation of Herat has involved full or partial restoration of 52 sites, several of which were disturbed prior to Clifton’s involvement.
Work has included re-grading and re-seeding of landscape surface cuts and other disturbances, sealing of potentially dangerous adits and recontouring of access roads. All remaining historical structures have been left intact.
“As one of few mining companies to receive this award, we are proud to accept it in support of increased environmental awareness in the mining community,” says Clifton Chairman William Moeller. “We are steadfast in our belief that successful mining development and environmental consideration can, and should, co-exist, and we will continue our reclamation program toward that end.”
The board presented Clifton with a plaque and resolution of commendation on April 22 at the office of the Utah Department of Natural Resources in Salt Lake City.
