Coleraine negotiates ferrochrome deal

An agreement to produce ferrochrome in Quebec is being negotiated with Ege Metal Endustrie A.S. of Turkey, Ressources Minieres Coleraine (ME) reports.

A large producer of chromite, Ege is a consortium of three Korean companies which has its headquarters in Istanbul, Coleraine says.

The deal would see Ege supply low-grade chromite to Coleraine’s planned ferrochrome plant during a 10-year period. The low-grade material would be mixed with higher-quality chromite from Coleraine’s deposits in Quebec’s Thetford Mines area.

Coleraine says the mixture would allow competitively priced production in Quebec of commercial-grade ferrochrome, known as “chargechrome,” which is used by stainless steel producers such as Sammi Atlas of Tracy, Que.
