Companies honored for reclamation programs

“These awards recognize first- class research, innovative techniques, plus quality and quantity of reclamation efforts by the companies,” said Mines Minister Jack Davis. “They show the high-standard results achieved throughout B.C.’s industry.”

Noranda’s Boss Mountain molybdenum mine near 100 Mile House won the annual provincial Award for its ongoing program of sealing off unused mine openings, re-seeding disturbed land, and re-shaping of former pit areas to blend into the surrounding terrain.

Equity Silver was awarded the metal mining citation for site reclamation and environmental monitoring at its Houston area mine, and for its acid drainage control, treatment and research effort.

Quinsam Coal received the coal mining citation for reclamation programs at its small open pit mine west of Campbell River, an environmentally sensitive area. The company’s program continually blends acid-producing and acid- consuming waste rock to neutralize acid drainage potential. These areas are re-seeded each spring and fall, and because of the Quinsam River salmon habitat nearby, phosphorous-free fertilizer is used.

Columbia Ready-Mix was awarded a sand and gravel citation for reclamation work at its sand and gravel pit in Colwood. Gulf Canada Resources’ Mt. Klappan coal exploration project in Northern British Columbia received an exploration citation for reclaiming an area affected by a pilot plant operation.

Delegates at the Vernon conference also toured the Brenda mine reclamation site near Peachland.
