It should be a great party when Timmins, Ont. — the city with a heart of gold — celebrates its 75th anniversary this summer. We wonder, though, how many participants will be prepared to get up Sunday morning during the weekend of the birthday bash, then cycle, canoe and run 55 km along the route taken by the early prospectors into the famous gold-mining area three- quarters of a century ago. It’s the fourth time the Porcupine branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has held the Great Porcupine Gold Rush Triathalon, and each year the event seems to increase in popularity. The race starts just south of Porquis Junction with participants cycling 20 km to Connaught, canoeing up the Porcupine River to Hoyle, then running 15 km to South Porcupine.
Whew]
We think anyone who even attempts it — hangover or not — should get a prize. So do the organizers: all participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. And if you don’t think you could make the entire route, there’s a relay race in which one member of a 4-member team cycles, two canoe and one runs.
Further information about the Aug 2 event can be obtained from Timmins’ city hall.
