De Beers Consolidated Mines‘ (DBRSY-Q) Canadian exploration arm has begun a program of ground-based magnetic and electromagnetic surveying over the area of the Knife kimberlite on Rhonda‘s (RDM-V) Epworth property near Coronation Gulf in Nunavut.
The program’s goal is to locate targets for a five-hole (minimum) drilling program slated for mid-May. The holes will be aimed at: delineating the size and internal structure of the Knife kimberlite pipe; and providing more detailed information on diamond content.
In late 2000, De Beers analyzed 20 samples representing an aggregate of 397 kg from Knife. The samples yielded 208 microdiamonds and nine macros weighing a total of 0.1275 carat. One 20-kg sample from a 6-metre interval yielded 54 diamonds weighing 0.04748 carat.
De Beers can earn a 70% interest in the 10.2-sq.-km property by spending $10 million on exploration. Rhonda will retain a 30% interest carried to production.
Rhonda also holds title to the Inulik claim block (totalling 324 sq. km), which is contiguous with the Knife claim. In July, the company plans to begin a program of glacial till sampling, prospecting and airborne geophysics. Reworking of existing geophysical and geochemical data from the area has already identified a number of potential kimberlite anomalies.
